The Structure of Scientific Revolutions by Thomas S. Kuhn explores how paradigm shifts influence scientific advancement and our understanding of knowledge. This book, along with others, is available as an eBook. Kuhn emphasizes the role of paradigms in shaping the narrator's theoretical perspective, while also considering the social dynamics within scientific communities that significantly affect the acceptance of new transitions.

Those not in favor have described this text as one which de-rationalizing the logic of science in an attempt to add sociological comparison. Proponents however say is it a remarkable text, shedding light on the real value of western science.

Another title worth mentioning would be the The Interpretation of Dreams by Sigmund Freud. In this work, the author writes more about the unconscious mind and how our thoughts and behaviors are shaped by our dreams. He describes unconscious thought as following a sequence of condensation, displacement, and symbolization.

Freud, the father and founder of psychoanalysis, significantly impacted various fields, including psychology, literature, and art. He deepened our understanding of unconscious wishes and desires and introduced interpretative techniques such as free association, which encourages individuals to recognize their thoughts and feelings.

The physiology behind exercise
Compared to our resting state, exercise poses a significant increase in demand for the body. At rest, our nervous system maintains a parasympathetic tone which affects the respiratory rate, cardiac output, and various metabolic processes. Exercise stimulates the sympathetic nervous system and will induce an integrated response from the body. This response works to maintain an appropriate level of homeostasis and for the increased demand in physical, metabolic, respiratory, and cardiovascular efforts.

Exercise challenges many human physiological systems that need to adapt in order to maintain homeostasis, this is the inner balance of the body. While exercising, homeostasis is encouraged by the increased amount of CO2 and nutrients demand, the need to get rid of CO2 and metabolic waste products, rising body temperature and acid imbalance and varying hormone levels.

Improved Pulmonary system
Pulmonary ventilation is activated via. the respiratory centre in the brainstem with parallel activation via. the motor cortical drive which activates skeletal muscles and afferent Type III-IV muscle afferent fibers. The respiratory system works alongside the cardiovascular system. The pulmonary circuit accepts almost all of the cardiac output. In exchange to the increased cardiac output, perfusion increases inside the apex of each lung, increasing gas exchange surface area (decreasing alveolar dead space). The maximum exercise training ventilation rates are subject to increase by a factor of ten in comparison to ventilation rates at resting levels.

Improved Musculoskeletal system
The three types of muscle fibre are Type-I fibres (slow-twitch fibres), Type-IIa fibres (fast-twitch fibres) and Type IIb fibres (fast-twitch glycolytic fibres), which all possess different characteristics. By introducing progressive overload exercise training, skeletal muscle fibres will hypertrophy, meaning it will increase in diameter and volume.

Better Hormonal response and Immunological Adjustments
In relation to the Endocrine system, plasma levels of cortisol, epinephrine, and dopamine increase with maximal exercise and return to baseline after rest. The increase in levels is consistent with the increase in sympathetic nervous system activation of the body. To enhance bone and tissue growth, the growth hormone is released by the pituitary gland, alongside insulin sensitivity and testosterone levels. In addition to this, training helps to enhance some components of the immune system. This therefore reduces the susceptibility of infections. In contrast, it reduces the functionality of immune cells taking effect after overstraining.

Working from home is more important now than ever. This practice is constantly evolving, with many organizations adopting hybrid models and flexible arrangements. This post shares examples of effective practices that are being embraced by both small startups and large corporations.

Structure and routine is imperative towards preserving mental wellbeing when working from a remote basis. This means, where possible, make suitable adjustments to construct a home working environment. Creating a designated area helps create an effective working environment. Using productivity apps and tool can really support with this.

In the absence of steady schedules, it can feel that the boundaries between work and personal time feel merged. Try aim to maintain a regular sleep schedule and work patterns. This can be done by getting up around the same time, ensuring to eat breakfast and freshening up. Morning routines help kick-start the day. Some suggestions would be to allocate some time to read, write and exercise. When the workday draws to a close, remember to stop working. You could create a ritual like leaving the room you were working in or making it clear by sending a sign off message to some colleagues.

3. Establishing ground rules with others
Creating boundaries is important to help preserve your wellbeing at home. Do not reprimand yourself if you do not manage to accomplish and complete your tasks. We are all human and so we will make mistakes. Always remember to ask for help when you need it, too. Your manager will be less able to see if you're struggling, so let them know sooner rather than later.

Perhaps when we look into the future of remote work companies may not revert back to “business as usual” measures. The pandemic may be the tipping point convincing people that flexible work is the best for all. Considering these points, it is harsh reality at least for the short-term. From money savings, having more significant time with loved ones, working in cosy clothes, avoiding crowds and traffic - the perks of WFH may just be endless.

So... I miss the office?
While working from home inevitably comes with its challenges, there were a number of benefits highlighted too. Working from home can be a special and rewarding opportunity. Whether you are on a full-time contract or work only part-time, avoiding the office daily grind feels great. There are heaps of ideas out there available to explore across the web. Here are a few of my own as part of my quarantine routine, suitable under these reformed measures.

1. Finding your Funk and Soul
Spotify does wonders in creating playlists to match your moods and get your emotions going. You have access to pre-made playlists to lighten a sombre mood, or you can create your own themed playlists - e.g. '90s rock heroes', 'cheesy feel-good songs', 'future', or why not create a 'not a love song' label?

2. Exercising your Mind and Body
In this pandemic, social distancing rules are critical to follow to limit the risks to your loved ones and broader society. But it shouldn't limit you from stretching your muscles or taking care of your mental health. For example, you can tune into fitness videos or take a stroll/jog outside during quiet hours.

3. Memos, Journals and Organised clutter
Consider organising your thoughts by writing them down. This may segue into new, great projects or journals. The work created can be kept as sentimental to you in the future as interesting time-capsules. There are a large number of free-to-affordable online platforms that may help in the process (Skillshare, YouTube...). All you really need is a pen and paper.

4. Practicing Mindfulness in this Mayhem

It is easy to slip into a negative stream of pessimistic, depressive thinking. Often it is our subconscious thoughts that manifest into personal actions we take. To take a grip on this, you can practise mindfulness. One app I use is 'Smiling Mind', which is available on mobile devices (similar to 'Headspace' but free!). This can be further supported by limiting our active media consumption. Moreover, why not get creative and write down questions such as the following:

What were the moments of pure good fortune?

What were your achievements, however small?

What praise and feedback did you receive?

5. Picking up or Discovering a Skill or Hobby

Want to read that book collecting dust on your shelf, learn about the art of screenwriting, or even start a blog? Why not trade that Netflix show for time to devote to a skill? You may discover a new-found passion or develop a way of self-expression. Quarantine does not have to be a negative, boring experience.

So... Pandemic over?

Although the immediate crisis has become less severe, the long-term impacts on health, society, and the economy are still important topics for discussion and research. From a global health perspective, the potential emergence of new variants poses varying risks. Economically, we are witnessing ongoing shifts in employment, trends in remote work, and supply chain challenges that are affecting different sectors.

The public appeal of a vegetarian diet has become more alluring, with many groups promoting ‘Meatless Mondays’, ‘Tofurky Tuesdays’ and other special days in a bid to reduce meat intake and promote a healthier lifestyle. But switching to vegetarianism – especially if you have been a lifelong meat-lover – is not a simple transition. Often, many individuals opt for a vegetarian diet for better health, religion or spiritual teaching, or other reasons. With the correct mindset, a gradual transition to this popular lifestyle can be rewarding for a lifetime.

It is better for your health

Vegetarianism has been scientifically proven in various studies to bring numerous health benefits, and vegetarians are generally said to be more health-conscious than non-vegetarians. These benefits likely result from both a reduced consumption of potentially harmful dietary components, including saturated fat, cholesterol, and heme iron, and increased consumption of beneficial dietary components, including fruit, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and nuts, which are rich in dietary fibre, antioxidants, and phytochemicals.

Enormous environmental benefits

A vegetarian diet is far more eco-friendly than an omnivorous diet. The extent to which this is true is unbeknownst to many. According to an early study, animal livestock farming contributes to 18% of global greenhouse emissions worldwide. This is more than the combined total from ships, planes, trucks, and other transport vehicles.

Stop species from going extinct

Raising livestock and cultivating the feed necessary makes up an estimated 91% of deforestation in the Amazon. This deforestation is not only contributing to climate change but also to species extinction. The issue lies in the idea that more land is needed to produce animal products, which requires swathes of forest and other ancient habitats to be destroyed. Wild animals are either displaced or killed in the process - a recipe for disaster and potentially the extinction of our species.

It saves animals

One of the more common reasons to go vegetarian is to avoid the slaughter of fish and animals. According to the Sentience Institute, an estimated 99% of animals used for food in the U.S. come from factory farms, where animals are kept tightly packed, often under inhumane conditions, before being sent to the slaughterhouse. Adopting a vegetarian diet is a testament to sparing animals from suffering.

Simplicity is key in the diet

For those of us who look towards creating a simpler life, vegetarianism can be helpful. Food should be enjoyed — it is one of the great pleasures of life, and sometimes having too much variety of options to choose from can make decision-making difficult. I have found that being a vegetarian helps narrow down my options when picking something from a store shelf or a menu.

It could benefit the global economy

A study conducted by Oxford University found that not eating meat could help reduce £700 billion in costs associated with climate change and healthcare. An estimated £700–1,000 billion could be saved by transitioning to this diet. In a study published by PNAS, an animal-based diet in the U.S. alone could cost between $197 billion and $289 billion per year, totalling up to a loss of $1.6 trillion by 2050. Consider the potential implications for other nations.

It is very trendy

Going vegetarian is much easier than before. With an increase in the availability of meat alternatives on the market and artisan vegetarian eateries, you can experiment with flavours. Vegetarianism is on the rise, and businesses know it. Many places are now catering to vegetarian tastes. Why not take advantage of them?

It is a delicious alternative diet

Vegetarian meals can be easily substituted with ready-made alternatives or fresh produce. There is an abundance of YouTube videos, tried-and-tested recipes, and vegetarian eat-out options that do not compromise on taste or quality. A well-planned vegetarian diet is not only nutritionally adequate but also a fun one to maintain.

So... In it for the long run?

Research indicates that vegetarian diets are associated with lower rates of various health issues, including chronic diseases, which in turn alleviates some of the economic burden on a global scale. Stay informed by exploring strategies for making the transition, discovering recipe solutions, and learning about nutrition!
