Marine Health as Earth's Wealth

Sustainable innovation in sea life, particularly in the UK, focuses on balancing the need for ocean resource use with the preservation of marine ecosystems. The UK, encircled by diverse marine ecosystems and reliant on its seas for food, energy, and tourism, has developed several key innovations to support the flourishing of marine life while fulfilling societal needs. This post highlights a number of notable sustainable innovations.
Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and Conservation
There are Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in place to protect marine life and ecosystems from overfishing, pollution, and habitat destruction. The Marine Conservation Zones (MCZs), introduced in the UK are safeguarded areas designed to preserve marine habitats and species. They help stop anthropogenic activities like bottom trawling and dredging, facilitating a safe space for marine ecosystems.

Bycatch Reduction Technologies
Bycatch refers to the capture of unintended species in fishing nets is a big issue for marine ecosystems. There are innovative technologies developed and adopted and methods to reduce by-catch. Bycatch Reduction Devices (BRDs) are an example which uses pingers - acoustic, “sound” deterrents. For adaptive catch, modified nets help too.

Biodiversity Monitoring Technologies
Innovative technologies such as drones, underwater robots, and remote sensing are being used to survey marine life and ecosystems. By its implementation, real-time data can be collected on water quality, marine animal behavior, and environmental changes. Oceanographic research vessels and technologies like eDNA - Environmental DNA sampling are enabling more efficient and less invasive ways to track biodiversity and monitor ocean health.

Marine Plastic Waste Reduction
In efforts for global stewardship, the Plastic Waste Reduction Act was passed a few years back in 2022. This is part of the UK’s government’s broader efforts to tackle single-use plastics. In addition to this, waste management systems are getting tested closely for improvement.

Eco-friendly Shipping Practices
The maritime industry is one of the biggest sources of ocean pollution. To tackle this challenge, Hybrid ships fuelled by both renewable energy and traditional fuels are in the development pipeline. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency in the UK has also been involved in strategizing regulations for cleaner fields and energy-efficient shipping operations.

Sustainable Aquaculture Practices
Aquaculture (fish farming) has faced criticism for its environmental impacts of habitat degradation and water pollution. To mitigate this different efforts have been put in place. For example, The Scottish Salmon Producers Organisation (SSPO) has worked with research institutes to improve the sustainability of salmon farming, such as developments of close-containment systems.

Circular-style use Approach
The circular economy approach promotes reusing materials and minimizing waste. In marine industries, this can mean finding innovative ways to recycle plastics, fishing nets, and other materials that are harmful to sea life. For example, the Plastic Recycling Initiative and Ghost Fishing UK, where materials are turned either into clothing, fishing gear, or repurposed for new uses!

Sequestering the Carbon
The concept of Blue Carbon refers to carbon capture by marine ecosystems like seagrasses, mangroves, and salt marshes. Preserving these ecosystems is an effective technique for both climate change mitigation and marine life conservation. Seagrass meadows are an example. This sequesters large numbers of carbon while facilitating critical habitat for marine species.

So... Collaboration needed?
Cutting-edge research is being conducted through joint efforts by the Marine Biological Association (MBA) and the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) to help us understand marine ecosystems. Overall, technology, conservation strategies, and sustainable resources are the key avenues for maintaining a balance in marine ecosystems and promoting sustainability.

Efforts to combat this focus on cutting plastic leakage, fostering sustainable materials, and enhancing environmental policies, backed by initiatives like the European Green Deal. Ongoing projects include river basin microplastic monitoring, R&D in biodegradable alternatives, and public campaigns targeting single-use plastic reduction.

The state of the ocean is shocking and the negative impact it has on marine life is awful. More needs to be done to reduce plastic waste and faster too. They especially need to look at collecting what has made it into oceans asap.

It is so important to take care of our marine life. Most people don’t realize some of our medications are found in the bottom of the ocean.

I pursued a marine science minor in college, and I am passionate about marine life. I wish more people were aware and did more to work on ocean health. Our environment is in dire condition and we need to do as much as we can.

I get so devastated whenever I read about the increasing amount of waste in the oceans every year. We as humanity should all work together to prevent the further destruction of marine life and ecosystem.
